Star Trek the Motion Picture… a discussion with Phantom Dark Dave.

First off, I want to thank Phantom Dark Dave for asking me to come on his show, The Podcast from Another World, and talk about Star Trek the Motion Picture with him. I’d mentioned I was a fan of the movie a few years ago and he said “We should do a podcast episode about it!”. You might remember that I had Dave on my show, discussing the original Mad Max film.

So, here we are, two years later, and we finally got a chance to sit down and chat about not only my favorite Star Trek movie, but one of my favorite movies, period. I have a lot of fond memories about this film and it was an absolutely thrill to get to discuss it with Dave. I very much appreciate him asking me to be on his show.

If you like classic science fiction and classic horror, please be sure to check out Dave’s podcast, featured on the Terrible Terror Podcast.

  1. The Motion Picture takes a lot of critical shrapnel, but it’s a sci-fi movie that dared to be deep, and it serves as a necessary bridge between The Original Series and The Wrath of Khan (where the movie franchise starts in earnest). My favorite parts of TMP are mostly the quiet ones, with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy trying to figure out how to work together again — and even if it’s possible to reestablish their shorthand — after a decade-long hiatus. The Motion Picture starts a story arc that carries through all six movies, culminating in the team’s retirement in The Undiscovered Country.
